Research Scientist - Hybrid Polymer Composites

Job Summary

UTC is seeking a Research Scientist in the field of novel polymers and composites. The candidate will conduct basic and applied research to develop and synthesize novel organic and inorganic polymeric materials and organic-inorganic hybrid molecules and blends for Air Force applications. The candidate should have extensive experience in polymer or hybrid material formulation or synthesis, as evidenced by research publications in peer-reviewed journals and professional society conference presentations. The candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary research team in the Composites Branch within the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. The candidate is expected to collaborate with the team to publish peer-reviewed scientific articles and aid in the development of technologies for U.S. national security interests.
The candidate must have extensive knowledge and hands-on experience in traditional and state-of-the-art techniques for the synthesis, reaction optimization, and characterization of polymers. Valuable experience also includes development of composite matrix materials, fiber coatings, adhesives, or functionalized nanoparticles. Successful candidates should have experience with glove boxes, Schlenk lines, and air-free synthetic techniques for the preparation of inorganic, organometallic, and organic polymers. Knowledge of other techniques such as click-chemistry, thiol-ene, Grignard, Diels-Alder, and polymer synthesis is preferred. Experience with high temperature thermoset resins and fluorination of organic polymers is also desired. The ability to tune the molecular structure and develop structure-property relationships is expected. Characterization techniques such as NMR, FTIR, X-ray scattering, GPC, TGA and DSC are expected to be utilized.
The position is well suited to a graduating Ph.D. looking for a post-doctoral position. This opportunity has the potential for longer-term employment.

• Investigate processing-structure-property relationships of candidate material systems
• Perform related analytical, computational, and/or experimental research tasks
• Summarize research findings in technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations


• U.S. citizenship
• Ph.D. (or to be completed in the next 6 months) in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or related fields
• Research in the synthesis, reaction optimization, and characterization of polymers
• Willingness to expand scientific knowledge base through interdisciplinary research
• Good communication skills, both written and verbal, and team-oriented approach
